This was valentines day with my lady-friend and i wasn’t going to be taking pictures, but the drinks were fantastic.  The Rundown:

Guinness Foreign Extra - ABV %7.5 (ABD .350 oz/$) A few weeks I heard that a new Guinness branded beer was making its way across the sea to our great United States of A-mericans.  For those few weeks I have been slowing down ever so slightly as I pass the Guinness rack at my local stores hoping to catch sight of the elusive beast.  I was lucky enough to find the first herd, their four necks stretched up begging to be opened, only a week or two after their official release into the US at the Wine Source in Hampden.  The short verdict:  Yes.   The longer verdict: At 10 bucks a 4 pack, it does offer less of a bang for your buck in the “Get You Drunk” department (2nd level next to menswear) than it’s sister beer, the Extra Stout (.404 ABD). However, the allure of this beer is not a cheap thrill, but a deep existential revelation as to man’s place in the vast Universe.  How does it do, one might ask?  I would say, “Well One, it may not shatter your previous conceptions of what a stout should taste like, but it is a damn good beer.” The new Guinness puts it up on the same pedestal as some of the lesser known but more respected (and more fortified) smaller brewed stouts.  Like a good classic stout, Guinness adds nothing fancy to the simple hops and barley, no distractions from the elegance of the design.  Like the lighter Guinness brands, the stout is extremely smooth and silky.  The taste is both strong and mellow with a good but not too strong bite of carbonic acid.  The bitterness of the malt finishes it off with a dry aftertaste in the mouth as one has come to expect from Guinness.  Although it really doesn’t bring anything new to the table, its simplicity and directness of flavor is a strong point.  Overall, a very good mass produced stout, one that I will probably seek out when I have my Guinness cravings.
